Navigating the ACA Website

It is now common knowledge that the website for the new Affordable Care Act or ACA (also known as “Obamacare”) has had its share of problems and difficulties since launching on October 1, 2014. How are our citizens that are directly affected by these difficulties supposed to cope with this new health insurance requirement?

  • The website Health Care Marketplace (formerly known as Exchanges) continues to be very slow and is still under construction.
  • You can reach a representative via phone: 1-800-318-2596 for individuals or 1-800-706-7893 for businesses.
  • I have heard great reviews of using the phone to get questions answered about the choices of insurance providors and premium subsidies that can be provided to you based on your circumstances and state of legal residence.
  • For our local Ohio area, I found 118 sources you can visit to get assistance in obtaining a new health insurance plan.

While the web site may not be an option for most of us you can still get some very good help via phone. Be prepared to spend between 15 to 30 minutes with the associate and do ask detailed questions about the coverage and costs. Be aware that not all plans will cover your current doctors, hospitals, or medications. Have a detailed list of all of the physicians you current work with, the local hospital you would use if needed, and what types of prescriptions you current need so that you can do comparison shopping for your plan.

As always, contact a team member at ASBC to help answer any and all questions related to this new law and how it affects you and/or your business. We’re all in this together and ASBC is here to help!
